If you work in UV curing, medical diagnostics, optical research or tanning equipment design, you’ve probably asked: What material can reliably transmit UV light without yellowing or losing clarity?
When designing equipment that uses ultraviolet light, selecting the right transparent material is critical. The wrong choice can block essential UV wavelengths, reduce efficiency, or lead to premature aging and safety risks.
Today we compare UVT folha de acrílico (high UV-transmitting PMMA) with three commonly used transparent materials: standard acrylic, polycarbonate, and glass.
UVT acrylic is a special optical-grade cast PMMA with UV inhibitors removed, designed to transmit ultraviolet light down to 260nm.
✅ Transmits UV-A/UV-B (260–360nm)
✅ ~80% UV transmittance at 300nm
✅ High visible light clarity (≥92%)
✅ No birefringence (no double image)
✅ Shatter-resistant, half the weight of glass
✅ Smooth surface, easy to clean & fabricate
❌ May yellow under prolonged intense UV exposure (inherent to all UV-transparent plastics)
Best for: UV curing, medical diagnostic windows, photochemistry, tanning beds, optical filters, research labs.
Regular acrylic contains UV inhibitors to protect the material from UV degradation.
✅ High clarity, low cost, easy to machine
❌ Blocks nearly all UV below 380nm
❌ Cannot be used for UV transmission applications
Best for: General display, windows, protection (where UV blocking is desired).
Polycarbonate is a high-impact engineering plastic.
✅ Extremely tough, high heat resistance
❌ Poor natural UV transmission; requires special coatings
❌ Lower optical clarity (~88–90%)
❌ More expensive than acrylic
Best for: High-safety glazing, machine guards, outdoor panels (with UV coating).
Best for: High-temperature UV applications (quartz), general glazing (soda-lime).
For most applications requiring reliable UV transmission (260–360nm), UVT acrylic sheet is the best balanced choice. It delivers consistent UV transmittance, high optical clarity, lighter weight and better safety than glass, at a lower cost than quartz or coated polycarbonate.
As a professional acrylic manufacturer with 17 years of experience, we supply high-quality UVT acrylic sheets, standard acrylic, mirror acrylic and other specialty PMMA products for global clients.
